Police Service Dogs

The Brandon Police Service Dog Unit currently has two Police Service Dogs: a Geman Shepherd named “Blue” and a Belgian Malinois named “Karma”. PSD Blue was acquired from the RCMP Police Dog Services at the age of 15 months. He was born through the RCMP Police Dog breeding program and was raised for a year by a RCMP member. Blue and his handler were trained by the RCMP Police Dog Services in 2010. PSD Karma was acquired as a puppy from the Winnipeg Police Service K9 breeding program. PSD Karma was raised by her handler from the age of 8 weeks old. Karma and her handler were trained by the Winnipeg Police Service K9 Unit in 2014.

The Brandon Police Service Dogs are trained in obedience, agility, evidence searching (drugs/guns/human scent related articles), area searches, building searches, criminal apprehension and tracking. In addition to their patrol work, the Police Service Dogs and their handlers are part of the Tactical Response Unit. The Police Service Dog Unit trains weekly, and completes a validation every year. BPS welcomed its newest female Police Service Dog in July 2013.
