Update – February 26, 2020 shooting in the 300 block of 6th street

An ongoing investigation into the shooting, which occurred on February 26, 2020 at a residence in the 300 block of 6th street, led police to become aware of other separate incidents involving some of the same individuals.

The first incident occurred several days prior to the shooting. Two male suspects broke into an apartment in in the 300 block of 6th street and confronted the homeowner and several guests while armed with a knife and a handgun. The suspects were known to the female homeowner. She was forced to leave with the suspects, as they threatened harm to everyone else present if she didn’t comply. The suspects took the victim to a separate residence within Brandon, where they assaulted her, and threated to shoot her if she tried to leave. She was eventually able to leave the residence the following morning.

On February 26, 2020, in the early morning hours, one of the same suspects, a 25-year-old male, returned to the apartment armed with a taser. He again threatened the homeowner that if she didn’t go with him, he would harm her and the others in the residence. The victim left with the suspect, but she was able to break free and run away.

Following the victim’s escape, the 25-year-old male suspect returned to the residence with three different male suspects. The four suspects broke into a separate apartment in the same building in the 300 block of 6th street. One suspect was armed with a sawed off shotgun, a second was armed with a machete, the third was wearing a ski mask and carrying a taser, and the fourth was armed with a baton. A struggle ensued, and one of the two male victims was shot before he was able to escape. The suspects fled the apartment following the shooting.

On March 4, 2020, the same female victim was at a separate Brandon address with friends. The same 25-year-old male suspect, accompanied by an additional male suspect entered the residence while carrying handguns. The suspects threatened everyone present and again the victim was forced to leave. This time she was taken to a rural residence. The following day the suspect brought her back into Brandon to yet another residence before she was finally allowed to leave.

On March 15, 2020, police arrested two of the male suspects in relation to the incidents at the residence in the 300 block of 6th street including the 25-year-old male. Upon their arrest, police located a loaded CO2 handgun. They have been held in custody at Brandon Correctional Centre since then and have already appeared in court on several charges.

Police continued to investigate these incidents following the arrests. On March 18, 2020, police obtained three separate search warrants into residences. A residence in the 1000 block of 10th street, a residence in the 600 block of 16th street, and a rural residence.

Following these searches, the three additional suspects involved in the incidents were arrested and lodged at Brandon Correctional Centre.

Another 24-year-old male was located during one of the searches. He was arrested and released to appear in court at a later date on a charge of Unsafe Storage of a Firearm.
