Frequently Asked Questions
Who should I call if I lose my pet?
First you need to phone the animal pound at (204) 728-3260. Also you can phone Animal Control at (204) 729-2345 and let them know what your pet looks like. Pets should be licensed, and if possible tattooed for easy identification. Make sure your pet is wearing its license tag at all times.
How do I license my dog/cat?
Pets can be licensed at the licensing department in City hall, 410 9th Street. All cats and dogs over the age of 6 months must be licensed January 1st of each year.
How do I report an animal bite, stray dog/cat, or dead animal?
Phone 729-2345. When reporting an animal bite, be sure to note the date and time, where the incident occurred, who was involved, and who the animal belongs to. Also, be sure to call your doctor if you've been bitten by an animal.
What kind of response time should I expect when I call Animal Control?
Calls are answered on a priority basis. During our regular hours 8:00 am - 6:00 pm, Monday to Sunday there is one officer responding to calls. After hours, an officer may need to be called out which may take a bit longer. Dog bites and dangerous dogs at large are a higher priority and will have a shorter response time than barking dog complaints, crow and gopher complaints.
How long can a dog bark before it breaks the by-law?
Under the by-law, dogs and cats are not allowed to "disturb the quiet of any person, by howling or barking". Naturally dogs can be allowed to bark when a person arrives at the property, it is when it becomes excessive that animal control can be contacted. Animal Control Officers will first speak with the dog/cat owners and give them a warning. If the problem persists, charges will be laid with a minimum fine of $25.00. If the owner cannot be located and the problem still persists, the dog may be seized and impounded. |
