How Do I...?

RoadWatch

Brandon Police Service teams up with Manitoba Public Insurance each year in order to provide “RoadWatches” (also known as “Check-Stops”).

RoadWatches are roadblocks organized by the police service conducted on the roadways on randomly selected days and times of day throughout the year. Drivers are randomly pulled in and checked for current license, registration, impairment and compliance with the highway traffic act.

In 2008 the Roadwatch program has seen people charged with the following:
  • 16 Impaired driving charges
  • 7 24-Hour driving suspensions (due to blood-alcohol content)
  • 13 Tickets under the Liquor Control Act
  • Over 106 Unlicenced Drivers
  • Over 136 Speeding Offences
  • And numerous other offenses, such as no seatbelts, invalid registration, other criminal code offenses and persons wanted on outstanding warrants.
(Stats updated 08/11/14)

Through the use of these RoadWatches we are not only keeping the streets safe from motorists who are posing a danger to others, but also deterring people from driving impaired or otherwise unsafely.

MADD Canada (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) also teams up with BPS for some of these Roadwatches, and drivers who are found to be driving safely and legally are often rewarded with hockey tickets and other goodies. It pays to drive safe!

The “Combat Auto Theft” (CAT) Program

The CAT program is a voluntary free program run by Manitoba Public Insurance in hopes to reduce the amount of undetected vehicles stolen at night.

Any vehicle owner may enroll in the CAT program by filling out the registration form, which indicates that the vehicle is rarely driven between the hours of 1:00AM and 5:00AM. They will then receive a decal which they place in their rear windshield on the driver’s side. When police observe a decal on a vehicle that is being driven between these hours, they will stop it and verify the driver’s license and registration.

The majority of vehicles are stolen between these times, often gone unnoticed until several hours later. The program aids the police in capturing thieves at the time of the offense. Businesses are also encouraged to get involved.
